Our Various Kilns

Small and Large Production Kilns

Both these kilns are gas fired fibre kilns. We usually fire bisque, reduction, oxidation and crystalline firing in each as appropriate. This is after I learnt how to get very similar results out of both. I always use my home made kiln baby-sitting software to keep me in touch with the firings at all times. The big one, about 50-60 cu ft, is a top hat style. The whole 4 walls and roof lift up for easy access. The small one is a more conventional front loader with 4 small burners firing vertically up through the floor.

Reduction Firing. The important point is approach the point of reduction (860degC for us) slowly. See copper red technicals for details about firing that glaze. Soaking is not usually done

Reduction Firing

Crystal Firing. This a long firing because of the crystal growing stages.

Crystal firing

Bisque Firing. Don't go above 200degC before all steaming is over. Always soak for at least half an hour to ensure all pots, all the way through, are up to temperature.

Bisque Fire

We pack our kilns well, gas is not getting any cheaper. Bag walls will be added before firing.

Anagama Kiln

We've tried wood fired work but it's hard to sell. Firings in this kiln take several days, tonnes of wood and lot of friends and port.
